Erb’s Palsy

What Is ERB’S PALSY?

Erb's palsy, also called Erb-Duchenne paralysis, is a condition where a person loses movement and strength in one arm. It can happen to both babies and adults, but it’s most common in newborns when their head and shoulder are pulled too much during birth. The injury usually happens around the C5 and C6 nerves, which are located near the neck and shoulder (called Erb's point).

This condition affects several muscles, including those that control shoulder and arm movement, like the deltoid (shoulder muscle), biceps, and others. In some cases, muscles in the forearm are also affected.

When these muscles are paralyzed, the arm tends to stay in a specific position often called the "waiter’s tip" position. The arm hangs down by the side, with the shoulder turned inward, the elbow straight, and the forearm twisted so the palm faces backward or downward.
